Love in Action

In preparing for our study on Love I came across this beautiful description of "love in action". I thought it does a wonderful job of summarizing, in very practical terms, what the Fruit of love looks like in day-to-day living.

In Letters to an Unborn Child, David Ireland wrote to the child in his wife’s womb, in part, because he knew he might never see the child. David was dying of a neurological crippling disease. He wrote in one of his letters; "Your mother is very special. Few men know what it’s like to receive appreciation for taking their wives out to dinner when it entails what it does for us. I mean that she has to dress me, shave me, brush my teeth, comb my hair, wheel me out of the house and down the steps, open the garage and put me in the car, take the pedals off the chair, stand me up, sit me in the seat of the car, twist me around so that I’m comfortable, fold the wheelchair, put it in the car, go around to the other side of the car, start it up, back it out, get out of the car, pull the garage door down, get back into the car, and drive off to the restaurant.

And then, it starts all over again; she gets out of the car, unfolds the wheelchair, opens the door, spins me around, stands me up, seats me in the wheelchair, pushes the pedals out, closes and locks the car, wheels me into the restaurant, then takes the pedals off the wheel chair so I won’t be uncomfortable. We sit down to have dinner, and she feeds me throughout the entire meal.

And when it’s over she pays the bill, pushes the wheelchair out to the car again, and reverses the same routine.

And when it’s over ---finished---with real warmth she’ll say, “Honey, thank you for taking me out to dinner.” I never quite know what to answer."

Love in Action.....what's does Love in Action look like in your world?

  1. This will be short because I am frustrated with writing something and then the blog telling me I'm doing it wrong. My thought on the color of love was it was red; love is strong, on purpose, intentional, and you can't miss it...just like the color red. I love the other color analogies everyone else has shared too.

  2. I also chose the color red. Not for the hearts-and-flowers reasons; but because to me, red is the color of sacrifice. And so much of choosing to love someone is to sacrifice yourself.

This week's study has been a good reminder and a bit convicting for me. I'll just ask that you all pray for me. Currently the person that's hard for me to love lives in my home. It's my 95-year-old grandma, Nonie. I truly do love her and was especially close to her as a child. As I got older I began to see her in a clearer light.

I still love her, but she's not an easy person to be around and to take care of. I do all of the things I need to in order to care and provide for her needs, but I often find a bitterness or resentment creeping in. So please pray for me. Thanks.

I hear your frustration and I am sorry that you are having difficulty in the blogging process. Here is one tip that may ease some of your frustration. After you write your message before trying to post it... copy it. If you lose it, you can then paste it back in the leave your comment window. I have also found that doing preview first and then posting seems to help in not losing postings

You may always email me your thoughts, as I so enjoy reading them. And this would alleviate some of your frustration. If you wish to share them with the group too, I would be happy to post them on the blog site for you....

This goes for all you gals out there who are having difficulties. Email me directly with your responses and at the end say "post please" and I will post them for you. That should be easy....right?

Regarding the color analogies... I do hope everyone will share a color. I won't reveal it to you now why I am asking, but I promise I will at the end of our study on the Fruit. I can almost promise that you will, or might even go wow when I do, as I believe it came from the Holy Spirit Himself during a time of prayer.

Janie and Shelly I am praying... thank you for your transparency in sharing.

  4. If love were a color I would chose Red and White. I remember singing his hymn when I was growing up.

"What can wash away my sin? nothing but the blood of Jesus; what can make me whole again? nothing but the blood of Jesus.
O precious is the flow that makes me white as snow; no other fount I know, nothing but the blood of Jesus."

Red is for the blood that Jesus shed as he died on the cross for me, and White is the purity I feel in my heart as my sins are washed away. (See Psalm 51 - Wash me,
and I will be whiter than snow ...Create in me a pure heart, O God.")

To me this is what Love is. Love is Jesus dying for me...and me letting that love into my heart and then allowing it to flow out to others as the Holy Spirit works in me.

God bless you all - I am praying for you.

  5. Pat, hang in there, babe. Looks like you got it down now. (-:

Shelly, I left a msg for you on the last blog window - or whatever they are. It's listed where you posted your last one, under last Sunday's (7/13) heading. Just make sure you know I'm praying for you. There is life after the blended family!

  6. The Love Results
At the start of our lesson on Love I asked everyone if they would email in simple terms the answer to the following question. Love is______________?

Here are the responses to that question. Not every answer is reflected here. Some were duplicates and some very personal, but for the most part, here they are as promised.

    Love is:
Love is pecan pie, chocolate, and being with your grandkids
Love is painful, caring about others and a verb more than a noun
Love is faith. 1Corinthians 13, and kindness
Love is not selfish, it is putting others first, and it is not all about me
Love is unconditional, peace, forgiveness, grace, hope, and sacrifice
Love is action, standing by your friends in a storm, relationships, and having someone who listens and is there
Love is Jesus dying for me and my lifeline to God
Love is eternal, and is Jesus

At the end of our lesson, after you had completed your lesson on love, I once again asked you to respond to the question Love is____________. I only received a few answers…not sure why.

Love is a powerful agent for change
    Love is a choice
    Love can make a difference
Love is agape all the way and agapao in word and deed

    Colors for love
    Love is Peachy-warm and fuzzy
Love is Red and White Red for the blood that was shed and white for purity as I am washed white as snow
Love is Jesus dying for me
Love is sharing Jesus love with others
Love is red the color of sacrifice
Love is red as it is strong, purposeful and intentional
    Love is romantically red
    Love is comforting green
Love is sky blue - open & free
    Love is happy yellow
    Love is reflective white
Love is powerful purple, evidence of God’s grace and love
Love would be white not do to the absence of color, but due to it being reflective of light
Love is all the colors of the rainbow
