God's Kaleidoscope
When doing research for our study on the Fruit of the Spirit, I always saw fruit such as bananas, apples, oranges, etc., usually in a bowl, basket or some other container being the visual representation for the Fruit of the Spirit; hence the original name for our study “God’s Basket of Fruit”. But, once I clearly grasped that it is one Fruit, not many, I was no longer comfortable with the Basket. The Fruit of the Spirit is one Fruit with many components… how do you put that into a visual? Then one day as I was praying the Holy Spirit gave me a great visual; a Kaleidoscope.
A Kaleidoscope is a single object with many dimensions, or colors; depending on which way the Kaleidoscope is adjusted, determines the pattern of those colors. In order to see the colors reflected and the beautiful patterns, you must have the Kaleidoscope pointed towards the light. No light….. No reflection… No reflection…. No colors.
The Fruit of the Holy Spirit is very much like that Kaleidoscope. As we abide in the True Vine (Jesus), as we surrender our will to the Holy Spirit, Fruit matures. Unlike the Fruit in a Basket which can be separated from the others, Holy Spirit Fruit is intertwined and each component, of the One Fruit, relies on the others. Our Fruit will be reflected in different ways at different times in our lives. As we look through the Kaleidoscope of our lives, yellow representing “Joy” may be bursting forth, and then a twist of the Kaleidoscope and blue representing “Peace” is being reflected in quiet splendor. The twist of the Kaleidoscope happens as we live out our day-to-day lives. As the events of life happen - the good things such as giving birth, marriage, answers to prayer, salvation of a loved one; and the not so good… divorces, death, illness, broken relationships, and various hurts along the way - our Fruit is revealed. Like the Kaleidoscope which possesses all the colors, so our lives possess all the components of Holy Spirit Fruit.
Our job, my job, is to allow the Holy Spirit to fill my Kaleidoscope (my life) with His Fruit; to keep the Kaleidoscope pointed to the light, Jesus; and to let the Father, God, turn the dial allowing the colors (the Fruit of my life) to be reflected that others might be drawn to the very heart of Jesus.
Many of you have encouraged me to publish this study on the Fruit of the Spirit. I’m not sure that will ever happen, but as a result of your encouragement I am looking into the possibilities. I have no idea where to begin; if you would join me in praying for God’s wisdom I would be greatly blessed.
Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to share with you through this study. We have been on an amazing journey together. I hope you have enjoyed our time together, as much as I have!
This blog site will remain for a couple of more weeks to allow you to post any last comments to the group or to me. You may also send them to me via email.
Be Encouraged!

Self-control- Keeping one’s self in-check !
Ever feel like Frodo? I know I have… almost daily. Frodo with an effort of his will makes a movement to toss the ring away, but finds it back in his pocket. He went through the motions with all his might, with all his strength and will, and yet somehow the ring is mysteriously back in his pocket. Not so mysterious… To understand the mystery we must go back to the beginning. Back to when Frodo first finds the ring; when Frodo is first attracted to the ring. Frodo had been told that the ring would not bring him any good. Frodo knew, way down deep that he should not pick up the ring, but, “he just couldn’t help himself”. Sound familiar? We often come across things in our life that we know are not good for us. Things we know are in direct conflict with God’s Word, and that to which He has called us. Yet, something draws us; something convinces us that "just this once" will be okay. We are not going to be taken in. We hush the voice coming from inside that says “no”, and "just this once" we step into the darkness. For the most part "just this once"--- could be just this once--- if only, we would stop there. But we survived the “just this once”. So, we find ourselves, once again, back at the precipice. No harm came to us last time… so just once more... "it will be okay" and we hush the voice one more time. The cycle continues until the voice inside us is no longer heard! Like Frodo we are caught, wondering how we got there, and feeling as if there is, now, no way out.
How we get there is not a mystery. We get there through our natural human bent--our sin nature. Whether we like it or not we are often attracted to that which we should not be attracted. The Devil surely helps us along by appealing to our senses and making it all seem so harmless, so beautiful, so attractive. The Devil knows if he can get us to do it once, odds are he can get us to do it again, and then again, until we are hooked. God, the one who knows us best, knew we would be tempted. He gave us His Word so that we might recognize the rings (the temptations) in our lives. He gave us the gift of Prayer that we might be able to go to Him and ask for help, for strength to resist picking up the ring (the temptation). He knows the wiles of the Devil and He gave us the most powerful weapon of all, The Holy Spirit.
Did you catch the phrase in our story of Frodo “with an effort of his will”? We don’t need to fight the battle alone… if we are willing to surrender our control to the Holy Spirit, He will fight the battle for us. He will give us the strength to resist, so that we need never succumb. If we surrender and listen to the voice from inside of us, we will be able to leave the “ring” right where we came across it. The secret to the mystery of Self-control is listening to the inside voice (the voice of the Holy Spirit) at the first sign of temptation. You surrender your will to that of the Holy’s Sprit, not after you have picked up the ring, but as soon as you see the ring. Once you have picked up the ring, and slipped it into your pocket, it is too late for Self-control!

Tying it together with Self-control
Self control is having our passions and appetites reigned in. It is passing up temptations of over indulgence. Self control is calmness under pressure and strength under temptation. It is not eating that 2nd piece of fudge when everything in you cries out for more, more, more. It is counting to 28 or 208 when you children have annoyed and frustrated you for the umpteenth time; it is remembering why you love your spouse and what he means to you in those difficult times, and not allowing temptation to carry you into the arms of another.
Self control is choosing to think good thoughts over bad; it is choosing to give understanding and grace instead of condemnation and retaliation. It is choosing to turn off the T.V. and spend time with your children, your spouse or both. It is choosing to spend time with God through Bible reading, devotions and prayer. Self control is meeting commitments. It is being there when you say you will be there, it is being on time and not late. Self control is giving 8 hours work for 8 hours pay.
Self control is intertwined with love, joy, peace, patience and the others. Picture a box made of love, with all the components making up the wrapping and then tied together with the ribbon of self control. Self-control keeps it all together. It is difficult to love another with out self control. I can have the desire to love, but it is Self-control that helps me see it through, to hang in there when people aren't always so loveable; It is difficult to possess joy and peace when we are bouncing all over the place due to lack of time spent with Jesus and poor planning to the point our lives are out of control, filled to the brim with busyness. It is difficult to offer patience and kindness to another, if we are out of control in our anger and so filled with self that we don’t care!It is virtually impossible to have hang-in-there faith, and just take it gentleness with out a strong measure of self control. Self control like all the other components is matured as we stay connected too, and abide in the True Vine, Jesus; as we surrender completely to the will of the Holy Spirit.
Self Control is an interesting component as you can experience self control in one area and lack it completely in another. Such as, we may be disciplined in our work or our jobs, yet at home everything is in total disarray. We may be disciplined, have self-control in our eating, yet our spending is out of control. Our temper with others may never flare, but with our children and family we rage. We may be disciplined in our daily Bible reading, and yet our prayer life is hit-and-miss or non existent. When the component of Self Control is being matured by the Holy Spirit, not just one or two areas will be in control, eventually we will have self control in all areas. Eventually we will be able to say I am a disciplined person, the Holy Spirit has matured this area of my life. How I pray for that day!

Gentle Jesus... lean not on your own understanding
A Gentle One!
“Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Matthew 11:29

Let Go and Let God
Men have been taught that gentleness is a sign of weakness, men must be tough, and they are never to cry. If a young boy is gentle and mild in nature his classmates often call him sissy. If he is a grown man, he often becomes the brunt of cruel remarks, with “gay” undertones. Gentleness is out and Macho is in.
I remember being taught in Government class that the President was the most powerful man in the U.S. And, being a woman I most likely would not be President. But, if I wanted to make a real difference in the world I must be in a position of power, I must be in the position to set the agenda. To make a difference I must participate in passing legislation, lobbying congress, electing officials, or running for an office myself. There was never any mention of making a difference through gentleness born out of soft, mild humility. Or making a difference in the lives of others one person at time.
We are taught at an early age that only the tough (rough, hard core, independent, able to take care of oneself, not leaning on, or depending on anyone for survival) make it in this world. If you want to get ahead you must be ambitious, self motivated, a go-getter, engaged in self promotion and assertive (and if you are not assertive enough, you may take classes to learn assertiveness). Everyone is looking out for their own interests, touting ones own horn and looking out for numero-uno, and that would be self! We have become an “it’s all about me” world.
As we shall this week the component of Gentleness is all about God. It is all about others, it is all about relinquishing our will and our rights, and it is about finding freedom to be all that God has for us to be, as we surrender. Gentleness isn’t about a certain personality type or the tone of your voice (loud or quiet). You can have a quiet, soft-spoken personality and not have a gentle and quiet spirit. Or, you can have an effervescent, bold personality and still have a gentle and quiet spirit (yes!). Prior to doing this study I always thought of gentleness in terms of someone who is soft-spoken. There is so much more; so much more! In a nutshell it means we “stop fighting God”. Did you catch that? Gentleness means we stop fighting, stop resisting God ...and give ourselves over to His authority. We can not do this on our own; it can only be accomplished as we surrender to the work and power of the Holy Spirit. Gentleness is developed in our lives through the complete surrender of our will to God’s will, and His way in our lives.

Heroes Hall of Fame
God’s Word says it is not foolishness… that we can have faith that those things, for which we hope for, will come to pass. That we can be certain of what we do not see. Now I’m not talking about that million dollar lottery, or the vacation home in Sedona…. but those too could come to pass. I am referring to those things that make a difference in the lives of others for eternity as we put "feet to our Faith". God is the only one who knows what that might look like in your life, or mine. Perhaps it will be as we pray for healing for someone; as we pray for salvation for a friend or loved one; as we take a stand against injustice; as we choose to put family first above career, money, prestige and success. Or maybe it will be as we sit at the bedside, of a hospice patient reading or just sitting quietly holding their hand. Maybe it will be as we provide water or food to the homeless, or offer a ride to someone who is unable to drive. For each of us, how we put "feet to our faith" will be different, and uniquely designed by God.
When my husband was called here to Arizona, to take on the position of Pastor to Senior’s at CrossPoint, we left behind a church family we loved, an active ministry, our friends, our families, and all we were connected too. Part of the family we left behind was our son and his newly married bride. This is the same son who had a life altering accident only 2 years before. There is not time to go into detail but Jason has many mental challenges. He does not drive and does not always comprehend even simple things. Leaving our son was the most challenging part of our faith walk to Arizona. We had many friends who told us not to worry that they would look out for him. We left Northern California knowing that God would be faithful to watch over him, and we were blessed by the many who would be standing in our place to help when needed (as we would be too far away). I would love to tell you that the many are still watching, but while well intentioned and good-hearted as they were, only one has been faithful to what was promised. Only one has continued, through all these years, to be faithful. She has kept going when the going was not easy, but hard. She has put self aside (for almost 7 years now) and has continually relied on God and put "feet to her faith". This friend has chronic-fatigue-syndrome and can end up in bed for days at a time… yet she has gone above and beyond as she has watched over, been there in times of trouble, driven him to get groceries, run a myriad of errands over the years, and provided food when he was jobless and had no income. She has driven him to doctor’s appointments and emergency rooms. She has put up with inappropriate phone calls from a wife who is lonely (as our son works the night shift) and she has had too much to drink. My faithful friend has prayed for me, and with me, as we have agonized over their poor choices and their alcoholism. We have prayed together for my daughter-in-laws salvation and for my sons faltering walk with the Lord. She is a true, living example of putting “feet to your faith”, of having hope and being certain of what we do not see. She is faithful not for a moments time, not only when it is convenient, not for what she can get in return, but out of love; the long-haul agape/agapao love. She is faithful out of her love for the God she serves! She is in my Faith Heroes Hall of Fame!
The Book of Hebrews, chapter 11, is often referred to as the Bible Heroes Hall of Fame. Here God has provided us with a written record of others who have come before us, faced many challenges, believed God, and came out the other side. This chapter starts at the very beginning “By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible”. The phrase “by faith” is written 20 times or more in this chapter. There are over 16 references to men and women who responded in faith, and have been found righteous as a result. By the worlds standard many of them would not have been considered successful for that which they hoped for and were certain of did not come to pass in their life time… yet they were faithful. They believed and they walked by faith not by sight.
Verse 4 says “By faith Abel offered God a better sacrifice then Cain did. By faith he was commended as a righteous man, when God spoke well of his offerings. And by faith he still speaks, even though he is dead.” Abel didn’t so something huge or out of the ordinary to receive such recognition or honor. Abel was simply being obedient to God as he went about his daily living. Yet he was commended as a righteous man, and because of Abel’s faith his life still speaks to us today! Abel left a legacy.
I can’t really say what kind of legacy I will leave behind. But I pray, I hope that at the end of my journey, here on earth, someone will be able to say “by faith Sandra made a difference”… if not in the many, at least in the life of one”.

Everyday Faith
Spiritual Faith is very much the same. We grow in our faith as we experience the character of God, and God proves faithful to His Word… time, after time, after time! After awhile you no longer doubt God's character as you have come to understand it to be trustworthy, faithful, unchanging and always there!
Jesus is the same, yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:8). In other words you can depend on, believe in, have assurance of, and trust in Him. You can trust Jesus for today, and you can trust Him for all your tomorrows! His past record has proven Him to be reliable, trustworthy.
Faith in God can become just like the light switch. You can believe and trust without a second thought.
Psalm 34:8 "Taste and see that the Lord is good..."

Kindness in God Stops
I/we plan our days not so that we see how much we can cram into them. But so that people can be treated as people, and not as interruptions. I/we plan so that relationships can be given priority over tasks. Oh sure I can always add one more thing to get done in our day, but at what cost? If the cost comes at the price of sacrificing my time with God, my spouse, my children, my relationships-those to whom God is placing before me…then the price is too high.
What has this got to do with the Fruit of Kindness you ask? Everything! If I am too busy with doing, if my day is too full with a myriad of things, I see people as interruptions, and not as God’s gift to me, or as His children. I become so focused on attaining whatever goal I have placed before me that I miss what I call "God-Stops" along the way, those opportunities for God to show Kindness to others through me, as I journey through my day. I can only speak for me, but when I am so focused on the task and have way too much going on in my life, I find I am tried and weary and feeling pressured. The last thing on my mind is showing Fruit of the Spirit Kindness to another. It becomes about me, not about others.
"God Stops" are divine appointments that God has set-up for us throughout our day. The places in our day where God wants us to stop and share the Fruit of Kindness. Sometimes He stops us so that we can interact with Him in a quiet moment of prayer, or so we can simply take a moment out to enjoy His creation which He set before us (His Kindness to us). Often times it is for us to interact with another, maybe to encourage them, to listen to them, or to show them Christ along the way (God’s Kindness through us). If I am too busy I will miss the God Stops along the way as I won’t be watching for them, or expecting them. If I am too busy, I have no time for a God-Stop and I have no patience for one either. And if I have no patience there is not opportunity for Kindness to flow from me to another.
From our study we learned that the Fruit of Goodness is more about our character then our doing. And Goodness comes from God, for only God is good. Again if I am too busy, too centered on self, I don’t spend time with God in His word. If I don’t spend time with the One Who is Good, the Fruit of Goodness isn’t a part of me and as we saw in our lesson, Kindness is the natural outpouring of Goodness, you really can’t have one without the other. If I don’t spend time in conversation with Him, through prayer, Fruit does not mature, and I become like a withered old tree with nothing to offer.
I read a definition lately that said, “Patience does nothing”. After having done our study on the Fruit of the Patience, and looking at Goodness and the outpouring of Kindness, I think I would define it much differently. I would define Patience as actively waiting in expectation, to see God’s plan unfold, and how I might get to be a part of that plan. To experience His goodness in ancipation of how He will use me to offer the Fruit of Kindness.
My prayer for you this week is that you will begin to see the little God Stops provided for you along the way. The places God quietly says to you …. “Daughter, stop, notice, here is someone I need you to show Kindness too.” “Daughter, stop, notice, here is someone I need you to pray for or with”. “Daughter, stop, notice, here is someone I need you to come alongside and help with a financial need.” “Daughter, stop, notice, here is someone I need you to just spend time with”. “Daughter, stop, come spend time with me”. And the list could go on and on. I pray that as you wait patiently and expectantly, that God will use you in mighty ways this week. I pray you enjoy the many "God Stops" in your journey this week.

The Character of Goodness - Revealed in acts of Kindness
“Good is the absence of defect or flaw, and the presence of complete wholesomeness”. Webster defines compassion as sympathetic consciousness of others' distress together with a desire to alleviate it. In other words compassion is the motivator that leads us to Kindness that takes action. As we yield our will to the Holy Spirit and allow Him to develop the Fruit of Goodness in our lives we will become sensitive and compassionate towards the needs of others. The Fruit of Kindness will be a natural expression and outpouring into the lives of others.
Kindness asks questions such as:
How can I show God’s love to another today?
Who needs a word of encouragement today?
Who can I pray for today?
Lord would you show me who needs my help today?
Kindness say’s “here I am Lord, send me.”
Years ago I read a short story in Readers Digest about a fearful little boy being put to bed for the night.
“A mother was putting her two-year-old to bed and as she left the room he pleaded with her not to go. His mother tried to reassure the boy by telling him that God would be there with him all night. The boy replied, ‘But mommy right now I need God with skin on!’”
I will bet every one of us has experienced a time when we needed to have “God with skin on”. I know I sure have!!! Ever wonder what color God’s skin is? I can tell you… it is whatever color your skin is. God uses His people, His children to love others. God uses His people, His children to bring joy to others. God uses His people, His children to bring unity and peace to a divided and hurting world. God uses His people, His children to show patience towards one another and He uses people, His children to show Kindness to others, to be compassionate to another, to help one another, to encourage one another – to be God with skin on.
When the Fruit of Goodness has been activated in our lives, when Jesus’ character is so reflected in us, the Fruit of Kindness can’t help but overflow. People are attracted to those who exhibit the Fruit of Kindness. As Mark Twain once said "Kindness is the language the deaf can hear, the blind can see, and the dumb can understand." In other words, the language of Kindness is something that transcends all language barriers, and is something everyone can understand!

Makrothumia - It's all about People!
Makrothumia is about patience with people who hurt you. It is about being patient with your spouse when he has forgotten to take out the trash, once again, or left his dirty socks on the floor when the hamper is only a few feet away. It is about being patient with your child, when once again, they have not cleaned their room, or done specifically as you have asked, or misbehaved once again in public and caused you embarrassment. It is being patient with a co-worker or volunteer who just doesn’t understand the job, even though you have explained it time and time again. It’s about not screaming or flipping-off the person in the car that just cut in front of you on the roadway. It’s about being patient with the person who asks you the same question over and over again. It’s about being patient with a parent suffering with Alzheimer’s and who can’t remember from one minute to the next. It’s about being patient with the waitress or waiter who isn’t performing the task as you think they should, or being patient with the very, very slow sales clerk. It is about being patient with people no matter the circumstance. Sure we get angry at the circumstances, we get angry at the disease, the situation, the injustice, but makrothumia, Holy Spirit Fruit Patience, is about the person. Makrothumia loves the person - is patient with the person- is extremely slow to anger-and is never violent with another, either physically or verbally, regardless of the circumstances.
I realize for many of us patience is difficult. Our anger is, or has been, out of control and to hear me say it is a choice, makes you want to scream. I understand, really..... I do… Patience like all the other components of the Fruit is not something we can manufacture on our own. It is not a choice of our will. We can’t decide “Today I will not respond to others in anger” (if you are at all like me, that one just doesn’t work). I can’t choose, just as you can’t, to not get mad or angry. These are human emotions and we will experience them; some of us more then others. How we respond is the choice. How we respond is the evidence of “Holy Spirit Fruit Patience” in our lives.
- Patience becomes a choice as I choose to relinquish my will to that of the Holy Spirit’s will.
- It is a choice when I get on my knees to God and cry for help.
- I choose patience when I seek counseling to discover the root cause, discover tools to help, and find healing for my out of control anger responses.
- It becomes a choice when I choose to not respond in anger but choose to walk away, run away, go outside and scream, to remove myself from the situation so as not to unleash my anger towards another human being.
“Makrothumia -Patience”…. Is it easy? No way! Fail at it? You bet!!! But each time I choose to respond with patience, the Fruit of patience matures, in me, just a little bit more.
Eph 4:2-3 “Be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other's faults because of your love. Always keep yourselves united in the Holy Spirit, and bind yourselves together with peace.”
Next week- The Fruit of Kindness…

Lord Teach Me Patience...and could you do it....Yesterday?
If we are not feeling to pressed for time, we take out our one minute Bible and get in a short 5 minute devotion. We stop at the pay-at-the-pump gas station for gas, (so we won’t need to walk all the way in to pay for our purchase) and on our way to work, or wherever we are headed for the day, we drop off our dry cleaning at the two hour cleaners and our film at the 1 hour processing place. We scurry through a busy, hectic morning, stop at a drive through for lunch, pick up our film and dry cleaning, and scurry through the rest of the afternoon.
On our way home we stop by the chicken place for a bucket of chicken. Once at home we prepare our 1 minute instant cooking rice. Microwave our 2 minute veggies and sit down to a family meal. Whatever conversation we have with our families, or friends, is likely rushed as we hurry off to accomplish our evening activities. Oh yes, and let us not forget that as we headed out the door this morning, we attached our cell phone to some part of our body, so that we could carry on a conversation with someone, where ever we went, in a moments notice at the touch of a button. We must be accessible to people at all times and they to us. We can't afford the luxury to take the time to sit and chat for a few moments, and to give someone our undivided attention. And heaven forbid we would miss a phone call, or need to return a call. We just don't have time. We have become the impatient-instant society, we want what we want, when we want, and we usually want it now, or at the very least in the next 10-15 minutes!
Not only have we become an impatient-instant society, we have become a multi-tasking society. To have singleness of purpose, or to be simply focused on one thing at a time is now seen as being inept, unproductive, or less than. I have often been referred to as the “Queen of Multi-tasking”. Until today I saw that phrase as a compliment and a result of my Spirit given gift of Administration. But now I wonder if it is more about my impatience, rather then my gifting?
Society has subliminally substituted the idea of waiting with the idea of wasting. We perceive waiting as wasted time. Perhaps this is why when those times come, that we are called to wait, they often bring out the worst in us. Why is it that some of us get frustrated waiting in line at the grocery store? Or get resentful if the person in front us is driving the speed limit, while cars on either side of us are speeding past, and we have to be stuck behind Mr. or Mrs. Slowpoke? Or why do we find ourselves so irritated when the lead car at a green light takes an extra 15 seconds or so to get going? And heaven forbid the person in the 10 item checkout line should have 12 items! And then there are our children who just seem to dawdle when you need them to hurry!!! Why do we get so frustrated, irritated or angry? Perhaps it is because we are in too much of a hurry to reach the destination or to accomplish the task etc. We just can’t stand to waste time!!! Our lives have become about the tasks, not about life. Our lives have become about accomplishing rather then loving. Our lives have become about having time rather then giving time. Our lives have become about us and not about others. Our lives have become about me rather then He!
Some of us have become so caught up in the final destination that we are missing the blessings along the way. We are so caught up in the final outcome and reaching the goal that we miss the nuggets, the rewards, along the way. We are so caught up in the doing that we have forgotten about the joy and the peace that comes from being patient, and taking time to enjoy!
In your lesson this week I pray you will find freedom from the urgent, and discover the Joy and Peace found in the “Fruit of Patience”.

Notebook of Trust brings Shalom
Unfortunately there is not enough space to share the story of our son’s life threatening accident, his time spent in a coma, and the ways in which the Lord sustained us through His perfect peace. In your lesson this week on Day three you were given a very special assignment – “The Notebook of Trust”. Ladies if you don’t do anything else as a result of this study…. Please do this one! Let me share with you just a glimpse of how this can make a difference in your life.
Almost everyday, especially in the beginning days, as I sat in the ICU I would write down what was happening. I thought I was documenting things for when and if we had to go to court. As I would sit there with our son Jason, I would pray and read the Psalms. Now I confess the reading of God’s word was short as I found it hard to concentrate. But God is such a loving and caring God that it only took a few minutes in His Word to receive hope and promises. Let me share with you just a few of those moments with God.
On Day 2 – “Those who know your name will trust in you for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.” Psalm 9:10
Day 3 “But you, O God, do see trouble and grief; you consider it to take it in hand. “ Another day - “You hear, O Lord, the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them and you listen to their cry,” Psalm 10: 14 & 17
Day 20 “I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.” Psalm 27:13-14”.
Jason was 22 years of age when this accident happened. He was not able to be on our insurance, and he had no insurance of his own. He was considered to be an indigent. We were having some major battles with getting him the proper care due to lack of funds. And the battle had been going on for a number of days at this point. They were going to send him to a nursing home rather then rehab. We knew he desperately needed the rehab in order to return to a somewhat normal life.
On Day 21 - “The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and I am helped. My heart leaps for joy and I will give thanks to him in song!” God truly worked!!! Jason was sent to a hospital with great rehab facilities, for his kind of mental and physical injuries, for 3 weeks to receive treatment at no cost!!!!
God sustained us, gave us the peace which the world cannot understand… heck I can't explain it, and I am not sure I really understand it…. But I know it’s from God, and I know it’s very, very real! I and my hubby have experienced it in mighty ways. So when the devil gets in there and tries to make me doubt he loses and I win.
I have God’s word in the Bible, but I also have a very personal record of ways God has interacted in my life. Of ways He has personally delivered my family and me. Trust me…. To go back and read the ways and to be reminded of how much He loved and loves; cared and cares; is pure joy and complete peace, and no matter how hard the devil tries to convince me otherwise… he can’t for God’s provision in my life is recorded in a very personal and tangible way. So if you didn’t do your assignment from day three… I hope this will encourage you to do so. I would like to tell you that as a result of this I am no longer filled with fears. But I can’t. Fear seems to be my Achilles’ heal, the devil knows it, God knows it, and you know….. “I know it”. But when I choose to trust, to lean on faith and what I know to be true about God I am able to come out on the other side of the fear. For me it is often a moment by moment, minute by minute journey.
If anyone would like a copy of a newsletter article I wrote regarding our son’s accident I would be happy to send you one. It is incredible to see how God was there every step of the way. Just ask for it by email and it will be on its way.

Peace, Wonderful Peace
Most people would define peace has not having war, or peace is not having conflict. Some might say peace is having an easy schedule, or when no one is home. We tend to define Peace as the absence of something else. Peace however is not the absence of something, but the presence of something. Peace is the presence of God in the midst of the conflict, the too busy schedule, the family situation etc. Peace comes when we acknowledge God will supply our every need and realizing His grace covers all. His grace is sufficient no matter the situation.
In our lessons on Love and Joy you discovered that God through Jesus is our core or source for Love and Joy. So, if I was to ask you what is the source of Peace… bet you might say God, and you would be correct? God’s peace benefits our emotional, mental and spiritual well being. Like Joy, peace is founded in a person and not in our circumstances. And for many of us, like Joy it is often hard to grasp in the day-to-day living out of our lives. Peace in part comes from knowing that God will take care of our needs. See 2 Corinthians 9:8; Philippians 4:9 Peace also comes as we realize that He is always with us. See Joshua 1:5 and Hebrews 13:5.
Christ came that we might have life and to have it abundantly. John 10:10. This particular verse has to do with our abundant life in eternity, but I believe it has a two-fold meaning. God loves us! He sent Jesus, His son, to die for us; to have a relationship with Him, both on earth and in eternally. It is unfathomable to me that God would go to such great lengths only to have us live a life not in abundance here on earth. I’m not talking about things, or wealth, but an abundance of the Holy Spirit; an abundance of Love, Joy, and Peace - God’s Love - His Joy - His Peace.
God’s desire is for our lives to be void of hatred, sorrow, war, fighting, and strife. We have already looked at God’s perfect Agape Love, and the Joy that comes from our relationship with Him. Now let’s look at the peace that can only come via the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6)

I got the Joy, Joy, Joy, Joy down in my Heart!
According to wake-up.org - Day Star “tradition traces the last ten years of Paul’s life in the following way:
AD 61-63 Confined in Caesar’s custody chained to a guard 24 hours a day
AD 63-64 Released
AD 64-68 Re-incarcerated and confined to the Mamertine Prison in Rome (this prison was known for its horrible conditions – no windows, no bed, no table or chairs – just a deep, underground stone cave, with only a small opening in the ceiling).
AD 68-Beheaded by Nero”
For 10 years Paul’s life hung in the balance, yet Paul refused to let imprisonment and the possibility of impending death steal his joy. How? By placing his faith and his trust in the person of Jesus. Jesus “who for the joy set before Him” went to the cross - took the punishment and beatings -and died the ultimate cruel death for us to have a restored relationship with God. Jesus was Paul's role model. Jesus was Paul's focus! Paul’s focus, his joy, was in the eternal purpose and future, not in the day-to-day circumstances of living. “I press on toward the goal to win the [supreme and heavenly] prize to which God in Christ Jesus is calling us upward.” Philippians 3:14 (amp).
There are numerous reasons to be found throughout the Bible for us to have joy. You should have discovered them in day 5 of your lesson. Just in case you didn’t get to day five I have listed them here:
Colossians 1:13; 2:13: rescued from darkness, redemption, and the forgiveness of sin
Acts 16:34: Salvation
Ephesians 1:3: Blessed with every spiritual blessing in Christ
Ephesians 1:11: Chosen
Ephesians 1:13: Sealed with the Holy Spirit
1st Peter 1:3-4: We have been given new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ… and into an inheritance that will never perish, spoil or fade
Our model for joy is found in the following verses:
“Fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” Hebrews 12:2-3
And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. (NLT) I love the way the Message translates it – “…every detail in our lives of love for God is worked into something good.
We may not always experience happiness. But we can allow the Holy Spirit to fill us with and develop in us "Fruit Joy"If we abide in the vine through our daily activities; if we surrender our will and yield our lives to the Holy Spirits leading; if we keep our focus on the author and perfecter of our faith, Jesus we will have true Joy. If we can remember that God works out all things, not some things, but all things to a heavenly purpose, we can have joy in knowing, that while we may not understand it, our trials, our "junky stuff" is being worked out for heavenly glory!
May you be filled with Joy!

Joy - Elusive, Mysterious & Rooted in Jesus
Real joy, the Holy Spirit’s joy is a natural outcome as we are connected to the vine. It is the supernatural result of abiding/remaining/belonging to the vine; of belonging to the One who is pure joy, Jesus!
Because this Joy is a supernatural outcome it is possible for us to have joy when the going gets tough. Joy is possible when we experience great loss, disappointment, illness or grief. Joy is possible when we face the pressures and frustrations of life. Joy is possible amidst the chaos of life. Many of the Psalms of the Bible were written by David, “The man after God’s own heart” (Acts 13:22). David before taking over his crown as king fled and took refuge in the desert, for years, as he was being hunted down, mercilessly, by the then current King, Saul. Saul sought to kill David. Yet as you read through these Psalms you will find David was filled with joy; Joy that can only come from knowing God and having a relationship with the Lord.
We all know many non-Christians who appear to experience joy in their lives. What makes Christian Joy different then worldly joy? The world’s joy is often based on feelings, things, and circumstances. It is not true joy but happiness. The Christian’s Joy is not based on feelings, things, or circumstances. It is rooted in the Source of joy! Apart from the Holy Spirit and a relationship with Jesus it is impossible to experience true joy.
Joy comes from a God-Jesus focused life. It comes from abiding on the vine. We cannot manufacture true Joy. It is supernatural and the power to possess it comes from the Holy Spirit. Joy is not found in the doing, or the having, it is found in the “being”; being in relationship with Jesus -being attached to the Vine.
“I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete” John 15:11…
“The joy of the Lord is my strength.” Nehemiah 8:10
When difficult times come, and they will, it is helpful to have God’s Word hidden in your heart. The Holy Spirit will recall to you those verses that you have memorized, and they will give you great strength and joy to get through the difficulties. How do you hide God’s Word? You do this through memorization of Scripture. I will be posting one or more verses that go along with our study for the week. May I encourage you to try and memorize at least one verse each week. (your verses for this week are posted above).
Your questions for this week have been emailed to you.
I pray you find and experience “true joy” this week.

Love in Action
In Letters to an Unborn Child, David Ireland wrote to the child in his wife’s womb, in part, because he knew he might never see the child. David was dying of a neurological crippling disease. He wrote in one of his letters; "Your mother is very special. Few men know what it’s like to receive appreciation for taking their wives out to dinner when it entails what it does for us. I mean that she has to dress me, shave me, brush my teeth, comb my hair, wheel me out of the house and down the steps, open the garage and put me in the car, take the pedals off the chair, stand me up, sit me in the seat of the car, twist me around so that I’m comfortable, fold the wheelchair, put it in the car, go around to the other side of the car, start it up, back it out, get out of the car, pull the garage door down, get back into the car, and drive off to the restaurant.
And then, it starts all over again; she gets out of the car, unfolds the wheelchair, opens the door, spins me around, stands me up, seats me in the wheelchair, pushes the pedals out, closes and locks the car, wheels me into the restaurant, then takes the pedals off the wheel chair so I won’t be uncomfortable. We sit down to have dinner, and she feeds me throughout the entire meal.
And when it’s over she pays the bill, pushes the wheelchair out to the car again, and reverses the same routine.
And when it’s over ---finished---with real warmth she’ll say, “Honey, thank you for taking me out to dinner.” I never quite know what to answer."
Love in Action.....what's does Love in Action look like in your world?

Do Everything in Love (1 Cor 16:14)
In our lesson last week we learned that the Holy Spirit is the Power of God, He is the energizer. As the Power or Energizer the Holy Spirit is the source behind the Fruit, or as I refer to Him, the “Producer”. It is through His indwelling power that the fruit is cultivated and brought to maturity. We also learned that the Holy Spirit comes to dwell with-in us at the time we become a Christian. Here is the good news, we already have the fruit. It is already being produced within. Did you notice it says fruit in the singular, not the plural fruits? The Fruit may be singular, but it has a number of components, 9 to be certain. This does not mean that each component will be in equal sections such as a grapefruit or orange. Each component (Fruit) will be produced in us uniquely. The quality of the Fruit will also be unique in each individual. Not only is the quality unique but so is the maturity level of each of the 9 components. In other words, not everyone will have the same level of patience, joy, or kindness etc. However, we all have some measure of each of the Fruit.
If the Holy Spirit is the Fruit producer, and I can’t grow it on my own, then why do I need to study it? Let’s revisit the apple tree. You plant an apple tree in your yard with the expectation it will produce apples. You obviously can’t produce the apples; the tree must do the producing. However, you have a huge part in the production process; if you don’t water it, fertilize it, prune it, and keep it bug free, the tree will not produce fruit; you will simply have a dead tree. But if you do your part, more then likely, the tree will produce a bumper crop of fruit. So it is with the Fruit of the Spirit. We do our part…. if we abide in the vine through the studying of God’s word. If we surrender our will through prayer, if we yield our lives to the Holy Spirits leading, the Fruit in our lives takes on shape and form. Remember Matthew 7:16; 20 and 12:33 remind us that we will be known, or recognized by our Fruit, be it good or bad. I don’t know about you, but, I most certainly wish to be the bearer of good Fruit. So let’s begin discovering the Fruit. This week we shall look at the first component and perhaps the forerunner to all the rest – Love.
Happy Studying, Sandra

The Holy Spirit – Farmer of the Fruit
“Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 2:38) If you are a born again believer (born again - signifying accepting Jesus, and being symbolically buried by immersion in water and symbolically raised to new life (new birth) do not doubt you have the Holy Spirit dwelling within. And as we delve further into the Fruit you will see evidence of this indwelling. Let’s begin to discover, to come to know the 3rd person of the Trinity - the Holy Spirit.
Galatians 5:22 tells us that the Fruit we are to bear is the Fruit of the Holy Spirit. In other words The Holy Spirit is the producer, or Farmer of the Fruit. To have a better understanding our focus this week will be on some of the roles, or characteristics of the Holy Spirit. Did you notice the word some? There is so much to be learned about the Holy Spirit, that to discover all would be a study in itself. What we learn this week will only be the tip of the iceberg! There are 3 things I hope you will discover:
1. The Holy Spirit had an integral and active part in the life of Jesus. Beginning with His birth, through His ministry on earth, and finally in His death.
2. That as a result of the Holy Spirits interaction we have been adopted as heirs and are God’s daughters
3. That the Holy Spirit is alive and active in you!
The Holy Spirit is often thought of as being a New Testament entity, but He was very active in the Old Testament. There are well over 30 references to the “Spirit of God” in the Old Testament (i.e.…the Holy Spirit). The Holy Spirit had an integral part in the creation of the World. We are told in Genesis 1:2 “Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters”. Hovering or moved (KJV) in Hebrew means to flutter, move, shake. I like the way Beth Moore says it in her book Living Beyond Yourself “the Holy Spirit is acting in His role as Energizer, applying the power and energy of the Godhead to the act of creation.” (Can’t you just picture the Energizer Bunny as he keeps on moving, and moving - and keeps us going, and going, and going?)
Prior to the Day of Pentecost in Acts 2, the Holy Spirit did not indwell the hearts of all children of God. Less than 100 people recorded in all of the Old Testament had been filled with, or empowered by the Holy Spirit. Furthermore the Holy Spirit came and went as He willed. Scripture records that the Holy Spirit not only anointed Saul, but also departed from him. Take a moment and read Psalm 51:10-12 here you will see the repentant, pleading words of David after his sin with Bathsheba. David knew God’s Spirit was indeed a gift. He knew from the experience of Saul that he could lose the Spirit’s powerful presence. That was then….
Today, 1 Corinthians 3:16, & 6:19, tells us that we are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in us. John 14:16-17 tells us the Counselor, (the Holy Spirit), will live with us - and in us forever. And that the world cannot accept him, because the world neither sees Him nor knows Him. But we know Him, for He lives with us and will be in us. The Holy Spirit is a gift from God who blesses us in many ways. The Holy Spirit is our “living connection” to our ongoing relationship with God, the Father.
Happy Studying,

Soil Preparation Summary
The answers to week one:
1. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit
2. A tree is recognized by its fruit. Example... when you see an apple tree you do not think it is a peach tree? Why, because you recognize the fruit which is being produced. In much the same way we should be recognized as having the Holy Sprit active in us by the fruit we are exhibiting.
3. Our purpose for growing fruit is to be recognized as a Disciple of Jesus
4. We cannot bear fruit by ourselves. There is no way we can produce it or muster it up on our own.
5. To produce fruit we must abide, remain (remember the Greek word is meno – it is a continual action of being connected, never departing from and always present with) in Jesus, the True Vine.
6. If we abide the passage tells us we have the reward of asking anything in Jesus name and receiving it…. This is not a vending machine mentality or action…. If we in fact our doing our part of truly abiding then what we ask for will more then likely line up with God’s desires. Remember it is a continual heart action of being in His presence. It is not … “okay God, I read my Bible this week, everyday I abided, now could I have a new car?”
7. If we obey His commands we remain (meno) in His love. The 2nd reward of obedience is the Joy of Christ will be in us… Our joy will be complete. The Greek word for complete is (pleroo) and it means to make full, to fill up, i.e. to fill to the full - to cause to abound - to furnish or supply liberally - to render full - i.e. to complete - to fill to the top so that nothing shall be wanting; full measure. Ladies this is such a beautiful picture. To have such joy, to be so full there is no room for anything else. We shall not be wanting for more, as we will be full to the measure!!!! Wow, can you just imagine.
A. What are some practical concrete ways we can abide: I gave you one in your notes to get you started and that was to memorize scripture… here is another…. Practice the art of seeing God. See Him in the beauty around you; in the actions of others; in the answers to prayer.
B. How can we become distracted or separated from the vine? One way is by not making God a priority. We schedule Dr.’s appts., hair appts., dinner dates with friends etc. Many of us use day planners, or some type of calendars to keep us on track. If it is important we schedule it… we find the time… should we do no less for God?
C. What am I currently doing that is working? Currently I am getting up every morning (well almost, I still struggle) between 5:00 and 5:30 am. This has not always been the case and it was not easy, but it has truly been rewarding. I have a morning cup of coffee and spend some time in prayer, as well as a short time of study, then allow time for sitting quietly and letting the Holy Sprit speak to me through God’s Word. May I encourage you to give it a try for one month… it will change your life!
D. Choose one way to increase your abiding…. I am going to pick one night where between 8:00 and 9:00 pm I read a book on a topic I wish to learn more or grow more spiritually in… such as Having a Mary Spirit by Joanna Weaver, or 6 Secrets to a Powerful Quiet Time by Catherine Martin.
Okie Doakie Study Buddies… it is your turn to answer A, B, C & D…. Let’s encourage one another, by sharing what the Holy Spirit has revealed to you this week.
Your next week’s lesson on The Fruit Producer will post this coming Sunday. In the meantime, how about sharing some of those answers?
Have a safe 4th of July and Be Encouraged.

Soil Preparation
Preparing the Soil for Fruit Production
Throughout the Bible, the word “fruit” is often times referred to that which comes from within… or the evidence thereof. As you begin to study the Holy Spirit and the Fruit of the Sprit you begin to understand that do-it-yourself is not the answer, as we can not produce Spiritual Fruit apart from the Spirit.
It is interesting that as we choose to abide in Christ, and yield - surrender, ourselves to the Spirit, being obedient to God’s word that the Holy Spirit produces “Fruit” in our life. It is the work of the Holy Spirit which is the catalyst for our fruit production. No matter how hard we try to grow it, or produce it we cannot do it apart from the Holy Spirit.
As we prepare to grow in our Christian walk let’s be sure our soil is prepared and ready for planting. Growing a garden, or in this case a fruit tree, requires certain elements to be in place; light, water, and nourishment. Anyone who has ever tried to plant and grow anything knows the better the soil preparation before planting, the better the crop. One way to prepare our soil is to renew our commitment to Christ. As we all know dead things don’t grow, we must be alive to produce growth. As we embark on our study we, you and I, should ask “Am I alive spiritually?”
In Romans 3:23 we read that all have sinned (missed the mark, missed or wandered from the path of uprightness and honor, to do or go wrong) and in 6:23 we read the wages (payment) for our sin is death (an eternal separation from God). In Romans 5:8 we are told that God demonstrated His love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us. Jesus, the son of God took on our sin, paid our wages, and died in our place. Have you accepted that gracious act and awesome truth? Have you decided to name Jesus as your savior and accept Him and His free gift of eternal salvation. Have you allowed Him to be the Lord (meaning Jesus leads---- you follow) over your life? Roman’s 10:9 tells us if we confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in our heart that God raised Jesus from the dead, then we shall be saved (spend eternity with Jesus). Before we can experience any kind of spiritual growth, this act, or seed of faith in Jesus must take root in our heart and in our life.
Are you alive? There on only 3 possible answers; yes, no, and I’m not sure. If you answered no…. if you have not yet accepted Jesus you can set foot on the path of walking with Jesus and growing in Him right now by praying this prayer:
1. Jesus I know I am a sinner, I desire to turn away from the life I have been living. I desire to follow you and your ways. I believe that you are the Son of God, that You did die on the cross for me and that you have risen victoriously, defeating death and now sit at the right hand of God in the heavenly places. I want to accept you as my personal Savior and allow You to have charge over my life as I learn to walk in your ways. Lord Jesus, please teach me from this day forward. Amen.
2. If you answered I am not sure you may wish to pray the following:
Jesus I know that in the past I asked You into my life (see ***below) I believed at that time that I was your child, but my life has not been one where my actions have lined up with that decision. And I have some doubts. Lord I want to know that I am Your child, please give me the reassurance I need, and seek. Lord I do believe that you are the Son of God, and that you died on the cross for my sins. Forgive me Father, and today I recommit my way to you!
***If you are not sure you have asked Jesus into your life, or do not understand the concept or terms of which I write. Please email me directly. I will be happy to chat with you. First John chapter 5 and verse 13 states “I write these things….. that you may know".... God wants you to be sure, and to know. I want you to be sure and to know too!
3. If you answered Yes! Perhaps you might pray, or write a prayer of praise to God. Take this time to thank God that you know you are alive in Christ, now and for forever. Praise Him for those things He has helped you to accomplish, and those things He has accomplished through you. Praise Him for the ways He has interacted in your life and made His presence known to you.
In order that I might pray for you more specifically this week, please share with me which prayer you prayed. (I am not asking you to blog this answer, you most certainly can if you choose) but to share it confidentially with me by email.
Your study questions and directions for this week's study have been emailed to you. If you did not receive them, please let me know.

Welcome to "Just Between Friends"
Our purpose is to grow deeper in our relationship with Jesus as we learn what the Bible teaches about different subjects.
As women we lead active lives! I have tried to design these Bible Study Discussions to offer you a meaty study, yet keep it simple, manageable, and flexible, in the hopes it will fit into most schedules (those schedules with very little room and those schedules not so packed). These studies are also being designed so you may keep your study light, yet allows for digging deeper for those who so desire.
"God's Basket of Fruit"
A study on the fruit of the Spirit - Begins - Sunday, June 29, 2008
What is the Fruit?
How do we acquire the Fruit?
Can just anyone pick from the Tree?
Is the Fruit ready to use, or do we need to mature the Fruit?
Do I get all the Fruit?
Do I only need some of the Fruit?
What do I do with the Fruit?
Will it spoil?
Join us as we discover the answers to these questions and more as we discover and taste from God's Basket of Fruit.
At the beginning of each week a new lesson plan for the week will be posted. You may do the assignments at your leisure throughout the week.
You may post questions, comments, discoveries, and share what God is doing in your life as a result of your study.
You may sign up by sending me an email with your request to join.
